Fun with Phonics in January!

 Howdy!  Howdy!
It's cold outside!  I think we're in the single digits this morning!
I've been enjoying my winter break (year round - I get 5 weeks off - don't hate) and next week the husband is taking me on a ski trip to Park City, Utah!  WOOOOO!!!!!  I've been in my closet putting together some cozy outfits.  Here are just a few I've set aside as for sure's...

Aren't winter outfits darling???
Being from Florida, I NEVER had winter clothes, let alone a pair of boots that WEREN'T western.  Now my closet is full of cozy knits!

Now, even though I am on winter break I've still been working on things I know my students are going to need practice on when they return.  They definitely are going to need activities in their Word Work drawers for Daily 5 and they are going to need review on long vowels.
So, now we have the 4th set of phonics activities!

We do MCLASS and nonsense words have become a part of our everyday routine.  This activity focuses on real and nonsense words in the form of long vowels.
I still have some friends that are struggling with identifying the difference between a short and a long vowel.  This activity will be perfect for them!
#weloveanythingwithaspinner
I created 2 spinner activities.  This will help them with onset and rime.  One is for words with long i...
and the other is for words with long a...
I also wanted my friends to be able to look at a picture, say the word, and HEAR what vowel sound it has.
So I created this activity for them to sort just pictures.
Then when they are done sorting, they can cut the pictures and match them to the word.
This activity I created to help them read and spell long vowels with ing.
They start off reading the long vowel word, then they take the snowball and put it in the circle to make the new word.  I put the snowball on a stick for a little added fun :)
I had to end on this...how funny is this dog???  I came downstairs and this is how he was sleeping.  All fours in the air!

Stay warm friends!

Get your classroom organized in the new year!

It's been a LOOONG time since I've stopped by my little blog!  But I had a good reason.  I had the chaos of Christmas, getting gifts packaged, preparing for a 10 day trip to Florida, report cards, and not to mention that I had to get ready to track out (I'm at year round and our breaks are called "track outs").
One of the things that I love to do is organize my classroom and find solutions to situations that are keeping things from running smoothly.  I often have teachers that come into my room and ask how I organize this or that, and I'm flattered that they would want my advice!  So I thought maybe I'd take a series of pics to (sort of) highlight some things that have made my teaching life a little easier :)

Headphones and Listening Centers

I stankin' HATE headphones.  They are constantly getting tangled.  I have 6 iPads in my classroom that my students use for Word Work for Daily 5 and they also use them for a math tub rotation.  They need headphones for the iPads.  The iPads have to be neatly stacked at a station and the headphones have to be unplugged.  Where do I put the headphones???  I had this rack (I think I got it at Wal-Mart).  I also have a tall cabinet in my classroom that's easy access for my friends.  I used a command hook and attached it to the INSIDE of the cabinet door.  That way, when the door is closed, I don't have to see headphones.  But the cords were still getting tangled.  And then I would hear..."Mrs. Johnson!!!!  I can't get the headphones!!!  The COOORRDS!!!"

Ahhh....I don't hear my name anymore :)
I found these little bags at Michaels.  I had to show my friends how to first wrap the cord around their hands, then tuck the cord in, then tuck the headphones in upside down.  Very technical.  But it works like a dream.  And they seem to enjoy the sheer organization of it all.

Now, other than the iPads, my students had to get the headphones to plug into the tape players.  So after they would yell about the cords being tangled, then I would hear, "Mrs. Johnson!!!  Which HOOOLE????"
So, to make that little part of my life easier, I took white out and colored the outside rim of the hole for the earplugs.  I should have taken a picture of the buttons but I forgot.  The play button is colored green.  The stop button is colored red.  And the rewind button is colored yellow.

But then, sometimes, I use CD players.  (I know.  My poor students and their confusion.)  And I would hear, "Mrs. JOOOOHNSON!!!  Which Buttonnnnn?"  I took permanent markers, like above, and colored them.

Now keep in mind that I didn't throw all this at them at once.  I started with the tape players and trained them to use those first and then once they learned how to use those I trained them how to use the CD players.  (The CD players are actually a lot easier to use.)  I have also trained them to put all materials away, headphone cords rolled up and bags put back.  It just all flows so nicely now!

CD/tape players are kept in bags on the walls.  They have a choice between taking a bag and listening to the book provided or listening to a book on the computer.  I switch out the books every 2 weeks or when a student asks me if I can change them.  Sometimes they like the books in the bags so much that they don't mind listening to them over and over!
(And yes, I have bags for every season.)

Papers, Papers, Papers!

I have my students turn in ALL their work into 2 "turn in trays" in the front of the room.  I used to have them keep a folder in their chair pocket that had "Finished" work and "To Do" work.  It was an utter disaster.  There was always paper everywhere!  And they didn't know what was what.

I taught my students that when ANYTHING is completed and you have no more to do, then it goes in the turn in tray.  If it's not done, it goes into their "Classwork Folder."  That folder holds anything they haven't finished.  Every few days, I'll go through the turn in trays.  Anything they completed at Daily 5 is considered practice so I mark it with a "P."  I only have 2 Daily 5 centers that actually have "paper activities" so it's not usually that much.  Also, if I see a student is struggling with independent work, I can use that work to show to parents.

Click on the picture below to get this poster!

After I've marked everything, I, or my TA, will file the papers.  I have a file for every student and I just sort as I get things checked.

Once a week, those papers go home.  The papers get taken from the file and put into the student's Monday folder.  The parents have to clean out the folder, sign the behavior and work habits chart inside, and send it back in.

On Tuesday, they bring back their Monday folders and put it in the drawer!  This process keeps everything streamlined and I don't see papers all over the classroom!

Now where do I put the papers that I haven't gotten to yet?
Once the week has been planned, I keep all papers, manipulatives, activities, etc. in these boxes.  They are labeled with the days of the week so I can just grab what I need and go.  I got them at Wal-Mart and were well worth the investment.  My guided reading table is right in front of these drawers so I can also turn around and grab what I need for groups.

Other Odds and Ends that make my life Easier!

At my school, students are not required, but encouraged, to visit the media center every day.  They are also encouraged to get at least 3 good fit books.  Each student has their own library card with a bar code and have to take it to the library to scan their books.  At first, I put a magnet button on the back and they would grab their card and go.  But then they would leave the card in the library because they put it down somewhere.
So then I decided to thread a rubber band through each card and hang them on a hook.

The students sift through them, find their card and put it on their wrist, like a bracelet.  They don't even have to take if off to scan it.  It stays on their wrist until they get back in the classroom where they hang it back up.

If you do Daily 5 or even have your students on reading levels, then you'll know the frustration when a student comes up to you and says, "Which books do I pick again???"  I bought these bins from Dollar General waaaay back during my first few years of teaching.  This is my 10th year, and they are still going strong.  What does that tell ya??
Each bin is labeled with a reading level.  The books inside have been leveled and also have the reading level in the top right hand corner.
I keep each students reading levels on the front of their book boxes.  I usually have them reading books ON their level, and I have them choose a level below and a level above.  I don't know if that's even the correct way to have a student choose books, but sometimes I find that they can actually grapple through the harder books.  Once a student moves up a level, I just cover up the old one with a new dot.

Trash: It always seemed to be all over the place.  And my students were always up walking around finding a can.  And then they would lose their papers that they were working on.
Until I put a little bucket in the middle of each table and said, "Here!  Throw it all away in there!"
I usually have a little friend pass them out (they call them miniature trashcans) and that same friend will dump them once the activity is complete.  I think I got these at Dollar Tree and they are that "bendy" plastic so they'll probably last me forever.
SO what to do about activities that aren't complete???  I saw this on Pinterest and it works like a charm.  Just glue an envelope to the back of their notebook and it holds all their loose papers.  First thing in the morning when they come in, they get it out and finish the activity from the previous day.
Organizing math manipulatives has made my life so much easier.  We no longer scream because a bag is ripped.  We no longer scream because the bag we got only has three manipulatives.  I plan on doing this with ALL my math pieces.  I got these at Wal-Mart.  They come in packs of six for I think like, $4.

I got this idea from Greg Smedley (Smedley's Kindergarten Smorgasbord).   I didn't think it would really work.  But I eventually got tired of hearing everyone scream about there not being any glue sticks, there not being a lid to the glue, or no glue to the lid.
Silence.
Glue Sponges.  Best.  Idea.  Ever.
Just wet a sponge.  Pour glue over the sponge.  Close the lid.
I bought these containers for easy stacking at the end of the day.

Speaking of screaming...
Oh yeah.  We don't. :)
Not with these little babies...
Now keep in mind that these little Quiet Critters did not work at all with my friends last year.  I would find pieces of Quiet Critter all over the room where a student had dismembered it.  But the year before that, my Kindergarteners would pet them and treat them with tender loving care.  I decided to pull them out this year and give them a try...
Silence.  They.  Really.  Work.
I tell them that if they talk, it frightens the Quiet Critter and they have to go back to their nest.  If they still have their Quiet Critter at the end of Daily 5, I give them a little treat.
My next project is to make new Quiet Critters.  Some of my friends this year are disappointed when they get one with one eye.

I know this post was SUPER long but hopefully you got some ideas on how to keep your teaching life SANE.

Happy New Year, Friends!

Currently in January!

I can't believe how FAST this year has flown by!  So I'm linking up with Farley for her January Currently!

Listening - I love The Today Show.  Now that I'm on winter break for the entire month of January I can watch it all day!  (Note: I'm at a year round school and I have a LOOOONG five week winter break.)

Loving - I just paid my car off!!!!!!  WOO HOO!!!  No more car payments!!  I have a red Ford Explorer and she's in great shape.  I plan on driving her for a VERY long time.  I'm a little attached to her anyway.  Does anyone else get attached to vehicles?  Or am I just weird?

Thinking - My husband and I have been married for 9 months now and well, I'll just admit it, we've kind of let ourselves go.  We go out to eat, we go to the movies, we sit in front of the TV and watch football and drink beer.  I also cook almost every night.  I used to run 3 miles a day and well, I don't so much anymore.  He and I have both made a pact with one another to start healthy habits.  I want to be in shape when we start having babies!

Wanting - So to start our healthy habits we needed a healthy hobby that we could do together as a couple.  So we got mountain bikes.  Not just bikes you get from Wal-Mart.  We went to a "bike store."  I had a bike fitted for my body frame.  Crazy huh?  Who would have thought a bike could be so technical???

Needing - I always have trouble with this one because I never feel like I need anything.  But then I think on how I NEED to improve myself as a person.  When you get closer to having kids, you start to think of the person you want to model to your children.

Yes - I will get back in shape.  Maybe not running 3 miles a day.  But at least be back to the healthy self I once was.  And have my husband be on board with it.

Maybe we'll talk babies.  We actually had "the talk" on the way back from Florida last night.  I don't think we're ready yet.  We're still waaay too selfish and I want to at least have a one year anniversary!

My wish for 2015 is health and continued blessings.  Scott and I are so blessed and now we are able to help others...it's such a good feeling!

Happy New Year Y'all!

The Christmas Questionnaire 2014

I'm linking up with Michelle for her annual Christmas Questionnaire Linky Party!

1. When do you decorate?

This year, Scott insisted that we go ahead and get a tree BEFORE Thanksgiving.  I have always bought one the day after but considering we traveled this year for Thanksgiving, I'm glad we went ahead and got it done.  I had new stockings from Pottery Barn monogrammed last year and I am very much enjoying them this year :)
Since we are newlyweds, we are taking our time purchasing a few things here and there after the holidays (so that it's on sale).  It was fun opening up all the boxes this year because I had totally forgotten about a lot of the things we bought last year!

2. Elf or no Elf?

Ugh - I'm kinda sick of the Elf mayhem.  It just looks like so much work to move that thing around every stankin day.  Yet, when Scott and I finally have kids and if the Elf on the Shelf is still the thing to do, I'm sure I'll jump on the bandwagon and be part of the Elf craze.

3. Christmas cookies or no baking for you?

I love baking Christmas cookies and that's usually where the extra weight comes from.  I have an awesome sugar cookie recipe that uses cream cheese...yum!  I actually just got these gingerbread cookies in the mail from a friend of mine.  She ordered them from Williams and Sonoma.  What a great gift!  They are sooooo soft!

4. Favorite Holiday Tradition?

Scott and I don't have any traditions yet but we've been talking about what we would like to start as newlyweds.  My family has the tradition of Christmas breakfast.  My mom makes breakfast for around 20 people and my parents open their doors to people other than family.  There are usually people there that don't have families to celebrate with.  So we gather with family AND friends and eat sausage gravy and biscuits, egg casserole, grits, bacon...you get the idea.

Scott and I have started collecting ornaments from places that we've traveled together so I guess you would call that somewhat of a tradition...we're still thinking about what else we can do once we start a family of our own.

5. Favorite Christmas Movie?

Ummm, obviously, this is a no brainer!
"Grace!  She died 30 years ago!"
"They want you to say Grace!  The blessing!"
"I told you we put it in too early!"
"Save the neck for me Clark!"

My cousins and I go on and on.

6. Snow or no snow?

Since I'm a Florida girl, I do love the snow.  And I'm obsessed with snow skiing believe it or not.  But there comes a point when I'm sick of it and I need a beach.  We will be celebrating Christmas in Florida this year so there won't be much of a cold Christmas.

7. Favorite Christmas song

Oh Holy Night...it's just so beautiful.

8.  Favorite Gifts to Give and Get

1. Anything from Kendra Scott is a wonderful thing!  I bought my mom the necklace this year and I got the earrings for my sister.  And if you sign up for the email list you can get 15% off your first purchase!
2. I worked at Estee Lauder when I was in college and have always loved their skincare.  Right now at Macy's, they have a HUGE bag of skincare for a very good price.
3. I LOVE Frye boots.  And who wouldn't love the Melissa Button Boot?
4.  Y'all, I love these Y'all tees!  They make a variety of super soft tees and they have every state available.  I know some ladies in my family that would love this Florida one!
5.  I always feel like a good makeup brush set is a necessity.  Sephora has all the best!
6.  I'm obsessed with these LL Bean boots!  The only bad thing?  There's a 2 month wait to get them!
7. Jennifer from First Grade Blue Skies has this camera.  She says it's an absolute must!  I would agree - her pictures are always beautiful!
8. For the girl that's always in the gym, these sneaks will make the workout that much cuter!
9. Being a Florida girl, I do love my Lilly!  This citrus inspired planner will take me back to the orange groves!

1.  Have a husband that is really hard to buy for?  Well at Passionate Homemaking, she gives you plenty of ideas to make your husband happy, happy, happy!
2.  Scott loves the Art of Shaving.  These sets are always a good idea.
3. Scott says he always buys American Eagle boxers because they last him about 5 years.  I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
4. When all else fails, a gift card to Dick's.
5. For the golf enthusiast, golf balls are a great stocking stuffer!
6. I've seen Scott checking out these golf shoes.  He loves Nike Golf!
7. Since we are now North Carolina residents, we can never have enough appropriate outerwear.  The North Face has great outerwear for many different occasions.  My husband works outdoors but has to meet with customers so these jackets still make him look presentable and professional.
8. I bought Scott this same travel bag last year and had his name monogramed on the front.  It's durable and sturdy.
9.  My mom gave Scott a saddle leather catch all with his monogram to keep by his bedside.  It's come in handy because it catches everything from pocket change to the remote controls.

I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas!

Very Merry Phonics Giveaway!

Okay, so has anyone been falling behind, lacking in a certain department, can't catch up, etc?  I feel like I'm in the weeds y'all!!!  For the past few months, I have been creating phonics packs for my word work station for daily 5.  They have increased in rigor and go in order according to our phonics instruction.  My friends love them and I always try to jazz it up with fun little bags and such.  Well, Very Merry Phonics is finally done.  But since I couldn't get it done in time for the Cyber Sale, I figured I would do a giveaway!

Reindeer Games is fun because we love spinners!
I love spinning.  Spinning's my favorite!
This spinner focuses on ink and ing.  My friends spin both, read the word and if it is real, they write it on the reindeer.

They love cookies for Santa!  I gave them a spoon and told them to pretend they were baking.  I gave them an actual mixing bowl but then I took it out after 2 minutes.  FYI, metal is WAAAY too loud for Daily 5.
All they do is pull a cookie from the bowl, read it and sort it under real or nonsense.  I included a cvc set and a set with digraphs as shown.    I found these little Christmas buckets at Dollar Tree.  Now all I need are little aprons...

Just Elfin Around is another spinner they use to practice ang and ank.  Just like Reindeer Games, they spin, read and if it is real, they write it down.  They USUALLY want to color the reindeer and elf when they are done and being that it is almost Christmas I usually give in.
My husband said the title was inappropriate...hmmm...can't imagine why...

I made this activity for several reasons.  One, they are using picture clues, finding the first sound and looking through the whole word.  I explained to them that these words cannot be sounded out and so they have to use their clues.  I also wanted them to get familiar with long vowels even though it is a skill I haven't taught yet.  I also made another activity that sorts long and short vowels that isn't shown.  I'll put that activity in next week when we start with "magic e."

And last, I have another cookies for Santa activity that focuses on ending blends.  I made another cookies for Santa activity because I KNEW there would be fights over the first one.  Oh, was I right.  I only have 4 students at word work at a time but while two are baking real and nonsense cookies the other two could be baking ending blends.  Just add a stinkin' spoon - that makes it ALL the more interesting!

So my friends, there are my activities (minus one) that come with Very Merry Phonics.  If you like it and are interested in getting it (for Free) leave me a little love with your email address.  I would be more than happy to share it with you this holiday season!

December Currently!

Hello cyber friends!  It's been a minute and when I saw that the new December Currently was posted I just had to join in on the fun!

Currently I am:

Listening to the Hallmark Channel downstairs.  I am really into this channel this time of year.  No, I'm not 70 years old - there are some really great movies y'all!  And my husband is out of town ALLLL week so I get the TV all to myself!

Loving that I have almost all my Christmas shopping done!  I started early and only have a few nieces and nephews to buy for.  Wal-Mart!  For the family Scott and I are giving wedding photos.  It's going to be a very vain Christmas for us.  But what daddy wouldn't want a book to commemorate all the money he spent???

Thinking of who else I need to buy for.  Don't.  Stresssss.

Wanting : This one I couldn't think of anything.  Plus, I already have SO much and I have so much to be grateful for.  I am blessed beyond measure.

Needing: Okay now y'all, this is pretty bad.  I like to rub my husbands legs at night with my feet.  He watches TV while I Pinterest on the iPad.  He actually pulled away from me last night because my feet were cutting him!  I have talons.  Yes.

Giving wedding photos.  But I really love the idea of RACK that Farley is doing with her students this year.  I am so doing it too!  That way, I'll be able to spread some cheer all through December.

Merry Christmas, friends!
