Character Traits FREEBIE

Character traits and comparing characters in and between stories is one of my favorite things to teach.  I love doing read alouds and see my firsties start to make connections between texts.  I whipped up a couple of activities this week and I thought I'd share them with you!

First of all, I'm not a very good drawer, so when I make anchor charts, I usually print everything out, glue it, and then laminate it.
I used little Lucy Doris to introduce inside and outside character traits to my students.
Then we completed a sort.  I did the first few with my friends and then I let them do the rest independently.
My whole group time is only 20 minutes to I have to make sure the activities are quick and carry over several days.

The next day we read The Littlest Pilgrim.
As I read the story, I told my students to really listen to how she was acting and to pay attention to how she looked.    They did a quick turn and talk, drew the main character and we discussed the inside and outside character traits.

So then we talked about how characters can change within a story.  For this standard, we read The Little Scarecrow Boy.  I told them to really pay attention to how he changes within the text...

This friend wrote: "He was sad because he wasn't fierce enough.  He faced his fears and scared the scarecrows."
We will revisit this standard with other texts and go deeper into this concept.

To go with this story, I decided to do a directed drawing from First Grade Blue Skies.
It was Friday, after all!
They turned out SO STANKIN CUTE!!!!
I plan on attaching the illustrations with their comprehension response sheets :)

All the character traits activities you can get for free HERE!

Need other comprehension response sheets?  You can get those for FREE too!

Enjoy, friends!
